Review of Phantasm: Ravager (2016) by Andrew F — 04 Oct 2016
It's a bittersweet parting gift for fans of the series and isn't exactly the finale I hoped for, but it is a return to the first movie's primary vision of exploration of death and mourning through surrealistic dreamscapes and alternate realities.
Ravager is definitely not a stand alone sequel and if you go into it without watching the first three movies, you'll be totally lost. You can probably skip Phantasm Oblivion, it's definitely the weakest of all five.
Ravager isn't going to blow you away. It's extremely low budget and the CGI is at times, laughably subpar, but it's definitely fun and somewhat satisfying for diehard fans such as myself. The climax leaves you to draw your own conclusion, while leaving the door slightly ajar for a possible sixth installment.
My opinion is that Ravager is the definitive end to the Phantasm franchise and the next Phantasm we see, will be an awful corporate studio remake.
