Review of Phantasm (1979) by Charlie H — 02 Sep 2007
I'm a huge horror fan, but I hate this movie, and I hate the franchise it created. The plot is terrible (if you can figure out what it really is), and there isn't a single character you give a damn about in the entire film. There's no catalyst for a single event in this film..it just starts, and sucks-ass for no apparent reason. Thank god the director, Don Cascarelli, went on to do better things: Bubba Ho-Tep.
The reson this movie is listed as one of my favorite films is because it inspires me as a filmmaker to do better, and gives me many reasons on why I as a director am really pushing to do horror the way it should be...not this mediocre shit. This film is truly overrated. Great concept...poor execution. This film is why horror gets a bad name.
