Review of Pete's Dragon (2016) by Ron H — 12 Aug 2016
Saw this yesterday. As several have noted, it was my favorite as a kid (I was 2 when it came out). Me and my daughters go at 4pm on Fridays as the theater is always empty then. It was pretty empty yesterday, but Pete's Dragon was pretty packed.
The first thing I noticed was it was mostly adults my age...so I guess it wasn't just my favorite. As for the movie, I LOVED IT! My kids liked it, think they liked the original better. Some of the Disney live action haven't been great, but they nailed it here.
Of course it's nothing like the original, but not much of a musical fan anymore anyway. Wasn't sure I would be able to buy in to the "furry" dragon, but as the movie went on I found it didn't bother me.
Without a fury dragon how would a lost 6 year old feel comfortable with him? The biggest concern was would he still be able to be scarry when the time came (well as scary as a Disney dragon would ever be at least).
..no problem there either. They even did a good job killing the parents without making it the focus of the film, while still leaving you with the memory of how Pete wound up where/who he was (this is essential to the film).
