Review of Pete's Dragon (2016) by Movie M — 18 Apr 2017
"Pete's Dragon" is a live action remake of the 1977 film by the same name, that explores the adventures of Pete and his dragon friend, Elliot. This movie brought a lot of heart, and did what every Disney movie does best, tug at the heartstrings, and attach the audience to the characters.
Everything that Pete (Oakes Fegley) and Elliot do just adds to the awe of seeing this odd relationship, and makes it feel like it belongs in the Disney franchise. One of the only gripes I had with this movie though, was how it went for a big ending, when it didn't really build up a whole lot of the movie throughout.
It's hard to explain without spoiling it, but this movie didn't focus too much on character development (although it did to a certain extent), but it focused more on just the plot, and trying to entertain the audience with the premise alone.
Near the end, the character relationships and development started to come out, but by then I just feel as though we could've been exposed to a bit more of these relationships, and that would've made for a much more pleasurable ending.
The acting in this movie was great, Bryce Dallas Howard (Grace) did a great job, as well as Oakes Fegley (Pete), probably my two favourite in this movie, but those aren't limiting the other actors.
At the end of the day, "Pete's Dragon" is still a good family flick, with action sequences and scenes that will for sure keep an audience entertained, and is worth watching if you're bored.
