Review of Peter Rabbit (2018) by Ashley M — 17 Feb 2018
I have to admit that I did not go in expecting to like this mainly due to the fact that I don't like cgi mixed in with real life actors and set. This movie surprised me. The toilet humor that is in so many of these movies was scant (maybe one scene), James Cordon as Peter Rabbit was okay, and while they did throw in current pop songs, they didn't last very long.
The main human characters (one of them being Dominic Gleeson of Star Wars fame) did have good chemistry and I wasn't bored watching them together. So many of these Live Action/CGI movies have human characters that are just boring and don't really contribute to the plot enough for it to be non animated.
Here I think it works. It's not perfect by any means, but the rabbit characters are all fun and interesting. If you're going for a straight adaptation, you will be disappointed (although original illustrations are featured (with a an actual purpose) as well as some beautiful animation.
However, it was good and if all cgi/live actions tried what Peter Rabbit managed to do okay, then I would be more optimistic with these types of films.
