Review of Pet Sematary (2019) by Mmadnessgames — 03 Jun 2019
The original 1989 film is better.
They try too hard to explain the supernatural phenomena, which is always a mistake. The original film devoted very little screen time to exposition. I love John Lithgow, but I preferred the guy from the Munsters in his role.
I don't like any of the changes they made. The third act of the film is absolute garbage. The actress who plays the daughter is utterly unconvincing. The mother is terrible. The little boy (who thankfully has very few lines) is cute but he's the worst actor of them all. The main actor (the father) isn't great either... They all make Lithgow look amazing by comparison.
Like the remake of It, this film relies too heavily on jump scares.
I don't like the constant flashbacks and vision sequences either. They might have worked in the book (I can't remember, it's been a long time since I read it) but they don't work in the film.
Stephen King wrote the screenplay for the 1989 film. It is an imperfect film, but at least he knew what to cut out - from his own novel - and what to keep.
It's not terrible. The first two acts are okay.
