Review of Pet Sematary (1989) by Everette B — 17 Oct 2012
The prosthetics, masks and the rather wooden acting gave me the impression that this seemed like a low budget tv-film. I did recognize King in his cameo as the priest who blessed little Cage after he had been hit by a truck. Well, uhm, I've seen this before, and sorry to say, it didn't get any better with third watching.
I've liked some of the movies based on King's books, but this just isn't one of them.
I think that one of the things that seem to spoil horror films, or weaken them signifiantly, at least for my taste, are scenes which just look plain ridiculous and too incredible to be happening not because they would defy belief but simply because they are too - well, ridiculous.
There are some interesting ideas in this horror film, but I think it got just silly. A kid throwing around grown up people, with tremendous strenght, for instance, may be fitting for a horror movie but it looks silly. Its well directed and has just the right atmosphere, but the story progresses too slowly, its too predictable, I didn't like some of the acting for some reason, and some of the special effects looked just silly. With a ridiculous scene to boost, I can't very well rate this film very high.
