Review of Pet Sematary (1989) by Shinyhappypurple . — 01 Jun 2011

"That barrier was not meant to be crossed. That ground is sour!".

There are very few horror movies that manage to truly freak me out. This is one of them.

Plot: Based on a novel by Stephen King; Dr. Louis Creed, his wife, and their two young children move to rural town. They are shown a pet cemetery near their home by an old man. He tells them that it was made because so many pets had been run over on the busy road in which the family lives. Beyond the cemetery lies an ancient indian burial ground. Strange and terrifying things begin to happen after a student at the nearby college is hit by a truck and the doctor buries the family cat in the burial ground that can bring the dead back to life, but with frightening consequences.

I'm not lying when I say this, this is one the freakiest movies I've ever seen. The whole psychological aspect of it makes it even more scarier. I have to say Gage is absolutely far more frightening than any monster. He reminded me a lot of Chucky from the Child's Play movies which scarred me for life when I saw it as a child. The only real problem I have with this movie is the acting. Just about everyone is bad except for Fred Gwynne(Herman Munster, from The Munsters) and the kid who played Gage. As for the characters, I didn't really have a problem with any of them. I really liked Louis Creed's slow descent into madness over the course of the film. The directing is pretty good. It still amazes me that this was directed by the same person who did the "so bad it's not even funny" TV movie Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, but at least she's made one good movie in her career. After seeing this, I really want to check out the book. Total Score: 7.8/10.
