Review of Persuasion (2022) by Rissois — 18 Jul 2022
Despite great performances from cast, this adaptation is junk. American adaptations treat Austen works as light romantic comedies, and this one is almost as egregious at it as the awful 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
But she wrote social satire, not YA romance. It's possible to adapt older works for modern audiences without losing the sensibilities of the original. For example, no Austen heroine would ever swim out into deep water contemplating suicide as they have Anne do here.
If you want to see Austen done right, check out the 1995 version of Persuasion. It's much better and actually feels like a Jane Austen story. Also, modern pop music has no place in an Austen adaptation.
That was the rotten cherry on top of this pile of garbage.
