Review of Personal Shopper (2016) by Jd R — 23 Mar 2017
What worked for me was the randomness of life in this movie. It's sort of like a Zeppo story. Exciting things are happening off camera, but we don't care, instead we follow this lonely, mournful girl around while she intersects with other people living seemingly much fuller lives.
Her boyfriend is in the Middle East and wants her to visit. Her boss is an inexplicable celebrity who gets to wear all the swag Maureen buys to parties Maureen can't attend. Her dead brother's girlfriend wants to move on and sell their house to their friends, but the friends want Maureen's approval in the form of using her medium abilities (posited simply as a given fact in the film) to assure them there are no malevolent spirits.
Assayas finds the beauty in the mundane amid the mundanities of the elite, and somehow it's all a slice of millenial life where Maureen has talent, wisdom, confidence and skill, but absolutely no sense of direction or even hope.
