Review of Personal Shopper (2016) by Bruce W — 25 Feb 2017
I can't understand the positive reviews and Cannes nominations for this movie. Just saw this movie at Perth PIAF film festival and our group of 4 was disappointed. Many other leaving the outdoor cinema seemed equally bewildered but some people seemed to enjoy it.
Not sure which was worse, the short film before it, Trespass, or Personal Shopper. Foreign films are my favourite. However this hotchpotch had me squirming in my seat in anguish. Stewart's again sullen performance was boring. The major attitude problem style seems to suit her but is painful to watch. I like good supernatural movies but I didn't find this remotely scary. Very simple effects such as dropping glasses and some misty supposedly ghostly computer graphics are from the 1960's. The prolonged mobile phone texting was boring. As for understanding and answers.... One star for the occasional beautiful French sights.
