Review of Personal Effects (2009) by Patrick L — 26 Feb 2013
This is one film I saw and reviewed (previously on Flixster....all those words gone now)....it was a decent film, perhaps one of the few of Kutcher's that I've seen and liked at least a bit but mostly I saw this because of Michelle, who is one of my favorite actresses.
Personal Effects stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Ashton Kutcher and Kathy Bates as a widow who has a deaf son, a wrestler and his mom who grieve the violent rape and death of their sister/daughter who has a young child. The young mom was found dead and nude and the accused killer is an unlikely sort. Pfeiffer and Kutcher meet at court and in grief counselling group and end up drawn together through their grief. The wrestler takes the widow's son on as a protege after helping him with bullies and convincing the bullied kid to give up a gun he pulled on one bully.
Tragedy occurs when the murder trial of the accused killer ends with an acquital and the young boy witnesses a failed assassination of the accused by the wrestler and later goes to.
Shoot the accused but the wrestler gets hit trying to save the man he now has learned is apparently innocent. The boy ends up in prison, the wrestler apparently recovers. 10/10.
