Review of Persona (2000) by Amal H — 09 Oct 2010
Ingmar Bergman's "Persona" makes the most sense when you realize the lines of your identity get soft & merge with people you spend a lot of time with. It's rare that I see these days a film piece that feels so personal. As if the parts were tailored with a complete understanding of the actors' wide emotional off-sets and capabilities.
A mute actress and a nurse develop a symbiotic relationship; they become co-dependent, and so comfortable in figuring and trying to figure each others' desires, progress in healing comes steady with caring, they reach a synchronistic apex, and progress is eventually tapped into a regressive jealousy that warps into apathy.
All this is aside the beautiful black and white scenery.
