Probably the most thought provoking, intense and creepy film I've ever seen. It serves as an incredible meditation on the human psyche and the complexities and nuances that make up our persona. Exceptional direction by Bergman, and I read that he initially wanted to title the film "A Bit of Cinematography" which would have worked as well as he made it evident that he meant to portray the film as an art form and not a piece of real life.

I can definitely see how this film influenced Paul Schrader while he was writing the screenplay for Taxi Driver. It also has arguably the most ambiguous ending I have ever seen. Are Elizabeth and Alma the same person whose afflicted with schizophrenia? Is Elizabeth just a mental manifestation of a repressed past? Is Elizabeth a sadistic predator who feeds on Alma's conversation only because she is enamored by the fact that Alma potentially loves her? Is Alma a masochist who feels the need to offer herself to Elizabeth out of envy or passion? What lies in the future for both of them? As the viewers Bergman invites us to create our own answers and therein lies the true genius of Persona.
