Review of Persona (2000) by Ryan H — 12 Oct 2009
Bergman doesn't sit and wait for the audience to understand. He is not only making a film, but filming a poem. Every single moment has added depth, nothing is just on a surface level. It really helps to listen to what the people who study Bergman have to say.
Most people wouldn't be able to sit through this film. Even though it's only 82 minutes, it does a lot within that time in which a lot of experiments occur. It's interesting when filmmakers decide to make the audience realize that they are watching a film and not real life, and Bergman reminds his audience quite often in Persona.
The technicalities of this film makes it beautiful, and the personal level it reaches for Bergman is what makes it extraordinary. Our persona is sometimes different than who we actually are. Which part of yourself will you give in to? Be afraid of pain or excessively living your life? Or can we ever be happy and find a perfect middle ground? I give this one a 5/5.
