Review of Persona (2000) by Michael C — 28 Jun 2011
Actress Elizabeth (Live Ullmann) suddenly freezes onstage, retreating into silence and inertia. She is put in the care of Sister Alma (Bibi Andersson), and they soon move from the hospital to a secluded house by the sea. Alma opens up to Elizabeth more and more, and their bond deepens. But why is Elizabeth silent?
Bergman's thematic goals aren't always clear to me, but the performances are nuanced, and Sven Nykvist's photography is striking. Together they form a quietly compelling psychodrama.
