Review of Persona (2000) by Kathy U — 21 Apr 2012
Wow. Cerebral to the highest level. I cannot fathom how deeply psychological this film is. I won't pretend that I fully understood the film. The first five minutes in the opening of the film at first didn't appear that significant to me - I thought of it as something Berman just threw in there to take time.
It kindve shown it relevance by the end of the film, however. The film is filled with surreal images and dream sequences in which I found it difficult to distinguish between illusion and reality. Like the scene where Alma the actress *spoiler* speaks but then denies doing so the next day when asked*** The two leads are in contrast with each other, the nurse who talks and the mute actress.
From what I kind've understood is that the Nurse is the external persona and the mute actress who won't talk is the inner, introspective one. Gosh it's hard to explain but I hope you get the point when I say shared experiences, psychosis, differences in interpretation of one's actions.
