Review of Persona (1966) by Ivan M — 03 May 2012
A fascinating and wonderful film from Ingmar Bergman which leaves you truly speechless. The great director himself looked back at this picture as one of his most important contributions to the art of cinema.
You are engrossed in the spell-binding experience immediately from the bizzare opening sequence which gives you unconscious clues as to the fantastically crafted tale in store. Sister Alma (Bibi Andersson) is a nurse, assigned to look after Elizabet Vogler (Liv Ullmann), a famous actress who, for an unknown reason, has simply stopped speaking.
Alma has to do the talking for the both of them, and the psychological struggle this brings, causes her to spill out her most intimate secrets and stories, while Elizabet silently listens. The picture boasts genius black and white photography, an emotional and wonderous plot and superbly memorable performances from Bibi Andersson and Liv Ullman.
Every film fan should view this picture, and if they have any knowledge of what is amazing in cinema, they will respect what an astounding work it is.
