Review of Persona (1966) by Quinn H — 17 Jan 2008
This film completely blew my mind...amazing. Complex, challenging, thought-provoking, frustrating film....and wow - did that beach story from Bibi Andersson take me by surprise.
What is up with the beginning? Is it setting the stage that this is only a film and nothing is real? You're taken on a journey about with Bibi Andersson trying to take care of Liv Ullman (who stopped speaking) and break through to her. Andersson talks and talks with no response from Ullman, and soon her own "Persona" is in question. Are they the same person? Was there really only one woman on the beach? Did they ever actually leave the hospital room? There's so much to think about here and so many interpretations.
It has been a long time since a film struck me like "Persona" did. Unbelievable.
