Review of Persona (1966) by John B — 10 Sep 2008
Bergman's predecessor to "Hour of the Wolf" is a glimpse into the madness of an actress who stops speaking and withdraws from society, only to wind up being cared for by a nurse who takes her to a beach house to care for her.
There, the nurse finds comfort in her mute companion, whom she slowly becomes both attracted and repulsed by her patient. But, as the film progresses, the lines of reality blur and is the actress crazy, is the nurse crazy, or is the nurse the actress? More than a page or two was taken for David Fincher's adaptation of "Fight Club.
" In short, a winner.
