Review of Persona (1966) by Wolfgang W — 27 Sep 2008
Beautiful photography, stunning light setups paired with masterful story telling. It really is a form of story telling in the purest sense. At first the movie appears to be about a struggle for love and friendship in a very one-sided relationship.
A nurse and her patient, a famous actress, move into a secluded summer house where they plan to treat her mentally induced muteness. While the caregiver opens herself more and more to actress, she ultimately suffers greatly under the one-sidedness of their relationship. Her patient listens to her with great interest but can or will not reply in any form, not even though non-verbal lines of communication.
The movie's reality lines start to blur and through strong hints of the director we get to see a second plot in the movie which is even more fascinating. A movie to watch over and over again.
