Review of Persona (1966) by Andrew I — 07 Mar 2011
If you're ever feeling too jolly, you can find this on YouTube. For me, the deplorable Damien Hirst-style 'shock art' tactics with the sheep and the newsreel footage severely and unnecessarily cheapened what was otherwise, for the most part, a decent film.
Very well shot, very well acted, unique and thought-provoking, despite the subject matter being of questionable taste. Towards the end however, Persona descended into a string of crazy dreams, meaning very little apart from having the overall effect of madness.
Life isn't actually as complex, frightening or depressing as this. A film by crazy people for crazy people.
