Review of Persona (1966) by David B — 07 Jul 2011
Maybe I was in the right frame of mind when I saw this - but it totally blew me away. I have to admit to it being the first ingmar bergman film I have ever watched but i'm so glad it was. It was avante garde without being infuriating, and for a film that was made in 66 there was so much in it that still seemed fresh and invigorating.
The shots of the two faces melding has been used since, or the child walking up to the screen of a blurry image, but for a film about identity to break the fourth wall and suddenly introduce the fallacy of it being a movie and therefore untrustworthy - I was agog.
outstanding film. it also helps that the two female leads are gorgeous AND talented.
