Review of Persona (1966) by Linda N — 05 Jan 2012
Jack Cardiff is, perhaps, my most-est favorite cinematographer. When asked whose work he admired most, Jack named Sven Nykvist. Persona was shot by cinematographer Nykvist. The film is one of the "more tolerable" films of Bergman.
It still has some typical Bergman flash edits (I'm not a fan, sorry Mr. Bergman). This film is well scripted, and is, at the heart, a film about co-dependence. I feel the story line is "psychologically sound," and the issues addressed are as real today as they were in 19665 when the film was made.
The Cinematography is superb! The things you can do with black and white. I can see why Cardiff loved Nykvists work. Note, this is NOT a film for children/youth. Adult topics and dialogue.
