Review of Persona (1966) by Alejandra G — 08 Jul 2013
If every movie I ever rated were to compare with only the 5 stars I can give to Persona, then I think I have overrated most of the movies I have ever watched. I am amazed at the complexity and completeness of Bergman's Persona.
The amount of layers of meaning meant, or meant to mean something to the audience, are achieved with such a minimal and yet symbolic style. One cannot just watch this movie, I guess as it happens with most of Bergman's work, we need to have our own baggage and knowledge to see and understand within the superficial story of the two women.
Are these actually two women? Are these the two parts of a person? Is this about narcissism and obsession? Is everything that happens real? I guess that is for each person to interpret. And I personally find all the interpretations fascinating.
With my little knowledge about cinema I think Persona truly is a masterpiece.
