Review of Persepolis (2007) by Luis M — 27 May 2010
This traditionally hand-drawn animation has all the right elements to tell the deeply personal and nostalgic tale of a young girl growing up as an Iranian since the Islamic Revolution. It is an entertaining piece, with humor sprinkled here and there, but also bittersweet as it provides insight into life under a totalitarian regime.
The nature of animation gives us a safe distance to peek into the painful reality, and an abstract quality that universalize the experience of dictatorship around the world. Too often we take freedom for granted.
