Review of Persepolis (2007) by Helio A — 15 Apr 2011
Very good! Takes us on a journey through the early life of an Iranian girl from an upper class intellectual family, set against the backdrop of the religious and political developments of Iran; the Shah's fall, political and intellectual suppression by the ayatollahs, Iran-Iraq war, and the repression of the women under the guise of religious piety. That's of course only one part of the film, the other is a genuine coming of age story of the main character. All the events mentioned above serve to grow her into who she is today, The animation and especially the humor used is absolutely top class.
This film does seem to have a certain political and religious (or rather anti-religious) undertone which reflects the viewpoint of the author so it is somewhat biased but this is really a personal story and should not be viewed as a documentary and in that respect, I think the biases add to the story and not detract them. 8.5/10.
