Review of Persepolis (2007) by Nate W — 13 Dec 2012
Based on her own autobiographical graphic novel, Marjane Satrapi brings a deeply personal sensitivity to "Persepolis" (co-written and directed by Vincent Paronnaud), the stylized tale about her coming-of-age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.
Stealthily blending in self-effacing wit to offset the gravity of the political turmoil that shaped her young life, and evocatively storyboarded in a stunning black-and-white style that reflects Satrapi's illustrations, the film is completely engaging from start to finish; an often hilarious and tremendously moving memoir that turns a child's eye on growing up in an oppressive society.
