Review of Persepolis (2007) by Ivan S — 21 Jul 2010
Like "Waltz with Bashir", this is a film that allows us to relate and to emphasise with the very personal experiences of someone exposed in their outmost depth and truth in front of us. The slowness of the telling of a very personal story reminded me somewhat of Satyajit Ray.
The story was beautiful with the different relationships, the developments in the characters over time all very well explained and very focused. There was the story of Iran, the story of the family, and the story of Marjane.
Several people have referred to this form of media as a new genre and I believe they are right, it is just a pity we have to revert to animation to achieve it (not because I do not like animation but simply because we seem unable to slow our films down and to give them enough honesty to tell stories like these).
Still the box office receipts of such films suggest they are for a smaller audience.
