First of all, I love the style of Persepolis. The dark black and white animation allows this film to appear more serious than some scenes actually are.

Persepolis starts as a history lesson which is necessary because I for one didn't know the details of the Iranian Revolution. Although its scholar-like attitude in the first half hour it's a powerful film which would've deserved an even higher grade. However when Marjane (the main character and author of the autobiographic graphic novels it's based on) moves to Vienna the film starts feeling more like your everyday biopic.

After all the ending is a bit sentimental but finds the right mood again and lowers the political tone which was prevalent in the beginning.

In a nutshell, Persepolis shows why I like these animated dramas, that go beyond Pixar's works, so much.
