Review of Permanent Midnight (1998) by Galen A — 14 Dec 2007
Want proof that Ben Stiller has range? Just sit down and watch this. A really darkly funny film where Stiller plays a hopeless heroin junkie who also happens to write for a popular children's sitcom (based on the true story of one of the writers of Alf).
He plays cynical, depressed, grumpy, and angry just as well as he plays goofy, neurotic, unlucky, clumsy, and lovelorn losers in most of his other films. He also manages to be quite funny in the darkly comic way you'd expect from this film.
Owen Wilson has a supporting role in this movie too, making it the first Owen Wilson-Ben Stiller film and kind of a prequel to the darker comedy they would do in the Royal Tenenbaums. Well worth a watch.
