Review of Perkins' 14 (2009) by Shawn R — 22 Sep 2009
2009 US Director: Craig Singer.
Score: 6.
Since it is an independent, low budget, release I didn?t want to slam this one too hard. I have to say though, some of it made that pretty difficult. Ultimately I?d say, if you are a hard core horror genre fan, you?ll find enough things of interest in this one to enjoy a viewing. If you are the casual genre fan, you should probably skip this one.
I really think this one tried too hard to be too many things and in the end it kinda dragged down the total film experience. It tries to give us a little Silence of the Lambs vibe with Mr. Perkins in the jail cell and his abducting young children for torture. It also, once the ?kids? are running around town, tries to give us the thrills and shocks of a zombie film or along the lines of 28 Days Later. The problem is, the plot doesn?t really mix those things together smoothly enough to really make it work. We also know very little about the main family, except that they are dysfunctional in a big way, yet mid-way through the film we are supposed to care about them all making it out alive.
The SFX are done well enough, including the gore. The acting wasn?t horrible, but also never got past average as far as individual performances go. The soundtrack is a ?hangs out in the background? shoulder shrugger of a score. So, as I said, if you are a hard core fan of the Horror genre, you?ll find a few interesting ideas and effects in this movie. If you aren?t, I doubt you will find much to hold your interest.
