Review of Perfect Sense (2011) by Da Z — 27 Jun 2012
European sci-fi movie set in Scotland during a strange epidemic, all humankind are losing the sensory perceptions starting by smell, then taste followed by hearing. An arrogant chef, Michael, and a confused epidemiologist, Susan, meet and fall in love while the world around them is falling apart.
This has a very good premise however the development is sloppy despite the strong performances of the two main leads (Ewan McGregor and Eva Green). I honestly cannot pinpoint whatâ(TM)s exactly wrong here, the movie shows us a very particular set of circumstances that are unlikely but possible and reactions are in the overall believable, however this doesnâ(TM)t ring true. We have the right ingredients however the film curdled. There are moments that are so hilarious that are almost ridiculous like the sudden urge to eat just before losing taste.
Perhaps the problem is that there is something amiss: the impending sense of doom. Nobody does catastrophe movies like the Americans.
