Review of Perfect Creature (2007) by Mark B — 14 Dec 2009
A shame. Interesting concept and pretty good production values let down by some weak direction and a lame male lead.
Loved the world it was set in, a His Dark Materials influenced mix of 60s and Victoriana, where alchemists had created vampires hundreds of years ago. I liked how the vampires had been incorporated into the church and were linked with the practice of holy communion! especially liked how there was little clumsy Hollywood style exposition of this world. The film just proceeded and trusted you to build up an understanding of it as you went along.
But in the end it's a bit of a failure. The plot is flailing by the end and Scott just can't carry the film. Burrows on the other hand is really pretty good.
In a parallel world this film is probably a classic. Ah well....
