Review of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) by Akiko A — 11 Feb 2014
I really enjoyed the first Percy Jackson movie, The Lightning Thief. Lightning Thief had a strong supporting cast...but this movie had none of that and it reeked of budget cuts, and had that B movie quality.
Logan Lerman makes a convincing Percy Jackson but he needs great direction to pull off being a demi-god. Though the budget between the first movie and this movie are only off by $5 million. This movie felt like it hired the lowest bidders for the work rather then considering quality.
One of my favorite moments from the original movie is when Percy summoned the water on the rooftop, that scene was amazing...there wasn't anything like that in this movie. Oscar winning VFX Supervisor Kevin Mack worked on the first film, why wasn't he hired for this one? Though it is based on the second book in the Percy Jackson series, it felt like the person who directed this film didn't understand the series.
..the magic of myths or legends. So all the excitement you associate with Greek/Roman Mythology was missing in this film.
