Review of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) by Valerie P — 22 Nov 2014
It was not that long ago that I shared my humble opinion of the second Percy Jackson book. I tried to not wait terribly long before viewing the cinematic efforts, and perhaps keeping the novel fresh in my mind has lowered my overall film rating.
As a family, fantasy/adventure this is a perfectly fine Sunday evening movie. It has excitement, a splurge of mythological knowledge, and even a few morsels of moral conduct for good measure. It was enjoyable enough, perhaps more-so than its predecessor.
Predictably, the book was much better. The alterations, especially where Tyson is concerned, really bothered me. I don't particularly like the casting of Tyson, or Clarisse for that matter, and much of the character development was pitched out in favor of more action. Isn't that always the case?
Still, it wasn't bad enough to turn me off completely. Anthony Stewart Head is such a dear as Chiron. It has its moments.
