Review of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) by Danny O — 03 Apr 2015
Sea of Monsters is about as average as it's predecessor. Once again, I can't help but feel disappointed with the quality of the film, seeing as the book it's based on is so good. I can sit down and enjoy the foolishness of its plot.
Some fight scenes are fun, others feel underwhelming. The effects are pretty good, making for a decently enjoyable movie. Some of the dialogue works, other times it feels like it could use some work. Many characters are quite derivative, and the plot just feels really uninspired.
It's trying to be the next Harry Potter, but it doesn't have the charm and isn't original enough to be like that. It feels to contained and intent to be a kid friendly PG film, really hurting the movie's tone.
In the end, it can be fun, but it's characters and story feel derivative and just not well written. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters gets 2/5 stars (C-).
