Review of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) by Henry P — 02 Aug 2013
When Fox got the film rights to the Percy Jackson series, they must have thought Chris Columbus was the best choice for this movie. Why? One word: Fantasy. They think just because he brought magic to Harry Potter, he could bring it to Percy Jackson.
They are two different kinds of people and worlds. If you think the Sorcerer's Stone's story was gutted, wait till you see what he did to this guy. While bringing good humor, and making the main characters likable, and maintaining the outline of the book's plot, Chris Colombus alters Annabeth's hair color from the book, from blonde to dark.
Next, we see Percy and co. sneek out of camp, where in the book, he was given the quest by the oracle of Delphi. I'd list more innacuracies, but that would go on and on. It wasn't too bad as a movie.
The soundtrack did its job, and the actual songs used here and there were appropriate to the situations. The CGI was amazing, especially with the water when Percy manipulated it with his mind. The plot was OK, I'm just dissapointed it didn't stick to the book's plot as much as it should have.
It reminded me of how a video game from The Legend of Zelda series (my all time favorite) went: Opening stuff, a quest for three items, etc. In the end however, I'm a little concerned about The Sea of Monsters.
It's just all the innacuracies. I can't wait to see it though, mayby it'll be better than this one.
