Review of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) by Matt A — 10 Dec 2013
I think this has been given too much of a bashing from people. Its clear nothing will be able to top the commercial success of the god awful Twilight films or the commercial and critical success of Harry Potter series but lets be fair they are anomalies, if the source material was better then there could be something else to topple it, but I digress.
This is just an average by the numbers modernising of Greek mythology for todays audiences. Its good enough but there are some doses of pretty bad CGI and ham fisted editing in a few parts. Logan Lerman had excellent material to play off of in 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' but here his talents are a little wasted as is most of the cast, although Uma Thurman chews the scenery a lot as Medusa, not as much as her OTT stint in Batman and Robin though.
A few surprises in casting, seeing Steve Coogan as Hades was a highlight, but other then that its OK, nothing to get anyone excited about, I'll continue with the franchise as it's not that bad but not as fleshed out as it could of been.
Harry Potter has nothing to worry about in the long run.
