Review of Peppermint (2018) by Jeremiah S — 24 Jan 2019
Critics hated this film. Audiences really liked it.
As an âaudienceâ? that âcriticsâ? for fun - I was ironically right in the middle.
I donâ(TM)t buy the criticisms about racism or misogyny at all but I also donâ(TM)t buy the audience reviews that this was an excellent entry in the revenge genre.
Peppermint is much like the candy itself - itâ(TM)s fine but not particularly memorable or anything special.
Jennifer Garner is really good and the action sequences are solid and engaging. Where the film fails to capitalize on its premise is in the actual revenge itself. The film unfortunately fast forwards past the revenge we care about and spends two thirds of the film focused on taking out superfluous characters.
The filmâ(TM)s âtwistâ? is also completely predictable and thereâ(TM)s an entire subplot mentioning the villainâ(TM)s boss that is brought up and the just forgotten about, never to be mentioned again.
But Jennifer Gardnerâ(TM)s performance is what carries the film and seeing her return to action after making a career as the caring-sweet-mother is refreshing and this film gave me plenty of reason to be want more of her in this genre.
