Review of Pépé le Moko (1937) by Stephen R — 23 Feb 2010
The first notable gangster film where the hero is also quite the villain, Pepe le Moko is a great little French film starring Jean Gabin in a great turn as the title character, a thief who seems to have connections wherever he goes.
One day he meets a beautiful woman visiting Algiers from Paris, and falls in love. The movie ends with a French convention, but it is still an exciting, fun, and well-paced movie.
