Review of People Like Us (2012) by Brandt S — 06 Jul 2012
People Like Us comes as a huge surprise for me. Chris Pine plays a side we usually don't see from him, and it's great to see him pick a different role for himself. He was great in the film, but Elizabeth Banks and Michelle Pfeiffer were scene stealers, and gave two of the best performances I've seen this year.
Michael Hall D'Addario, who plays a juvenile delinquent, was alright for a child actor. The film is very melodramatic, and at times a little too much, but overall it was very moving. It could have easily been really predictable, but there were many moments that I didn't see coming.
There is also a really nice balance between the humor and drama, having me laugh one moment and at the next feel sympathy for the characters. The emotion feels genuine and not forced. A really nice screenplay that was more for adults than I expected, and had me gripped to the screen.
The last scene is easily one of best endings of the year. A pleasant surprise that I will definitely be revisiting on blu-ray.
