Review of People Like Us (2012) by Sandy K — 14 Apr 2013
Sam (Chris Pine) is a wheeler-dealer salesman whose work life is imploding just as he gets word his father has died. Estranged from both parents, he reluctantly returns from NYC to LA for the funeral and discovers his father had a secret family and left a substantial sum of money to his daughter (Elizabeth Banks).
Initially furious at the revelation and tempted to keep the money for himself to bail himself out of his current crisis, Sam instead seeks out his sister (without revealing their relationship) to learn more about her while deciding what to do.
The evolution of their relationship and their eventual better understanding of their father is charming. The sister's feisty 11-year-old son adds humor and poignancy to the story as it explores what real family ties mean.
I enjoyed the ending with a home movie revealing yet another (healing) secret for them.
