Review of Penny Dreadful (2013) by Lupus D — 05 Sep 2008
As an excercise in psychological and physical cruelty, 'Penny Dreadful' is appropriately mean spirited and tense... but as a would-be cult classic, it often fails to effectively exploit its promising central concept (to wit, a young girl with an intense phobia of cars is trapped in one during a snowstorm, while a vicious killer lurks in the surrounding woods).
It's a nifty idea, and at its best 'Penny Dreadful' finds some inventive ways to get under your skin... but all too often the film suffers from slack pacing, underdeveloped characters, and repetitious action, almost as if the filmmakers were struggling to stretch a half-hour concept to feature length.
It doesn't help that it concludes with a disappointingly anti-climactic coda that just sort of fizzles out.
