Review of Penguins of Madagascar (2014) by Daniel E — 09 Dec 2014
An origin story, of sorts, which pretty much ignores the notion of narrative discipline in favour of raucous pace, a constant barrage of in-jokes, puns, character chemistry and ludicrous set-pieces. You can sense everyone involved knows what it is and for the most part, it's on the money; the film only really loses its footing in the final act, revealing its weakness by putting on the brakes.
No lasting classic here, and ultimately less than the sum of its parts, but nevertheless, fun stuff for everyone, including a cast that includes John Malcovich, who clearly has a riot playing the villain.
It is absolutely bonkers!
