It's so nice to see these guys get their own feature film. I always loved them in the Madagascar movies and in their TV series. That's why it's an even greater pleasure to say that I really liked this movie.
Even from the start, there were a lot of epic action sequences. They pulled off a lot of slick, logic-defying stunts that kept me smiling. The penguins have a lot of style; they're calm and collected, but really silly at the same time. No other characters are like them. They're really funny as well; the jokes hit hardest at first, then start to slow down as the plot warms up, and then heat back up towards the end. Even when it wasn't funny, it was always entertaining and made me smile. The performances from the perfectly cast voice actors alone make this something I could watch all day.
The movie is treated like a lot of family friendly movies. It tried very hard to keep everything moving very fast all the time. By the time half an hour passed, so many things had happened that I thought it was almost over. It was also rare for music to not be playing in the background. Luckily, it never got in the way of the dialogue and it does help set the tone for scenes. What does detract from the experience is how predictable it was at times, especially regarding how the new secret agent team fits into the story. That and the shoehorned romance keep this from being a perfect movie.
The fact that I managed to enjoy it so much despite being so cliché lets me know that I will love rewatching it.
