Review of Penguins of Madagascar (2014) by Evan C — 09 Jun 2015
I enjoy seeing the penguins wreck havoc in the ''Madagascar'' films, but apparently, a standalone is the last thing these characters needed.
I realized early in the beginning of the movie that the penguins are only officially funny when they are considered background characters, like in the Madagascar movies. I thought it was hilarious in those films when the penguins would have their own little segments in the plot-line, all including priceless dialogue and even action.
Not only do I wish the movie wasn't made, it's not even that funny. I chuckled in moments, but overall, the movie was not what I call a ''hysterical comedy''. It wasn't memorable either, with weak and dim-whited action scenes to poorly developed jokes. Adults overall won't find the film a ''classic comedy'', but kids sure will, because it's goofy. That's what I don't like. These characters are capable and have been seen delivering jokes that both adults and children will enjoy. In this case, only a child will accept this comedy.
Despite being a disappointment, Penguins of Madagascar did indeed have an impressive production design, with impressive visuals and bright colors that are built to draw the audience into the story. Sadly, the story wasn't good. The villain was cheesy and weird, plenty of characters were pointless, and is in my point of view, just an extended, bad episode of the television series of the same name.
Hopefully in the future, things will go back to normal. After all, knowing DreamWorks, Madagascar probably has plenty of sequels confirmed.
