Review of Penguins of Madagascar (2014) by Dee R — 17 Feb 2015
No. Not 72%.
The reason the penguins left, the way the villain got introduced, his motives, the interaction with the professional agents, it was all sloppy.
This movie had no decent focus or useful new characters; to me it felt like either the random alien octopus had to go, or the random team of secret agent animals. They did not work well together and just created two different conflicts, never mind they came right out of nowhere.
But if that wasn't enough, the youngest penguin in the group apparently needed a hardly mentioned side story as well, making the movie even more unfocused. I mean, the whole big finale would've been great is this movie was actually about Private, but it's not, despite the movie's intro. He didn't get the attention the intro promised.
The penguins themselves also appeared a whole less competent, and I didn't like it. They were skilled ninjas in the first movies, why are they now acting like a bunch of know-it-all children?
I was less entertained than I hoped to be, and I don't understand it how they were unable to do something with these characters. The pinguins were by far the most enjoyable characters in the series.
The inconsistencies were also all over the place, especially compared to the previous movies. Can these penguins read or not? Do humans understand animals or not?
