Review of Penguins of Madagascar (2014) by Campbell P — 21 Mar 2015
Penguins of Madagascar was not what I expected. I really enjoyed the Madagascar trilogy, I thought it would be exactly like that series. It was except with all the charm of the Madagascar characters. I really like these penguins, I really like them in the other movies and even in their tv show.
I find them really funny and they are even funnier in this movie. The biggest problem in this movie is the story, at times it doesn't know what it is. The last act of the movie didn't know what it was, it wanted to be funny but also serious and that really didn't work.
This was a movie that had lots of funny parts and funny characters but it focused way too much on that and not enough on a stronger story line. I chuckled at a lot of parts but not enough to be a full blown laugh.
The closest it got was the play on word celebrity squid names. That was pretty funny! The characters were likable and all but there wasn't good chemistry at all between the North Wind or between them and the penguins.
The romance between Kowalski and Eve was ridiculous too, I mean they had barely any connection and overall not interesting in the least. The one new character that was really good was Dave. He was a pretty good villain and had some pretty good lines to go along with his revenge.
Overall, Penguins of Madagascar was a pretty okay movie, it had the classic penguins and Dave that were funny but the story was not strong enough to be considered on point. This sort of movie is where you only watch it for the funny parts and not pay too much attention to the story but it was just kind of too hard to ignore.
D+.
