Review of Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) by Brad G — 10 May 2010
Overcome with emotion, depressed housewife Kathleen Turner keels over while attending her 25th High School Reunion; when she awakes itâ??s 1960, beatniks and poodle skirts. Suffering through old friends and family like Catherine Hicks, Joan Allen, Sofia Coppola (she really is not a good actress) and Jim Carrey (same goes for early Carrey) is miserable enough, but itâ??s her encounters with future deadbeat husband Nicolas Cage that present the most challenges.
With his terrifyingly squeaky voice and blonde pompadour, Cage is at his absolutely ridiculous best charging at Turner with painful gusto and desperate bravado. He is pathetic. And adorable. I love that the film delves into the reasons behind Kathleen Turnerâ??s past regrets and she gets to understand those maybe-not-so-bad choices.
The film is sometimes awkward and some performances may leave you scratching your head, but it goes in directions you wonâ??t expect. Thatâ??s worth something. VF.
